Overcoming life's challenges
History provides many narratives of perilous travels down the world's many great rivers.
In every case, the voyagers experienced hardships great and small, and in some cases life-and-death struggles, and none could foresee all the hardships that would be encountered during the long voyage: hostile people along the way (even among their fellow travelers) , shortages of food and drink and other resources, natural hazards, etc.
Coping with each struggles and challengers successfully was necessary to completion of the long voyage. In some cases they failed to cope in one way or another and dropped out along the way, but most coped intelligently and successfully, persevered, and survived to realize considerable rewards from their journey.
Each of our lives is analogous to such a river voyage. Each of us experiences unexpected hardships along the long path of his or her life. We likewise have to cope with these challenges in order to keep our lives on track. No one -- not the richest, not the strongest, not the most beautiful -- goes through a life without such adversities on one kind and another.
Sometimes life challenges overwhelms us. Help seeking is not a weakness. Realising that we need professional help is a step to healing. Malaysian Counsellors are bound to the Code of Ethics as laid out by the Board of Counsellors, Malaysia; the main one being "do no harm".

WHY I SEEK HELP...
Here is the perspective of a person who made the decision to seek professional counselling:
“Being honest with myself, I had to admit that I was not coping as well as I needed to with life’s difficulties and challenges. I was confused and unsure about what I could do, when a close friend advised me that I could benefit greatly from the objective perspective on my problems that a professional counsellor provides. So I went for counselling, and my life has really improved. I am gaining in self-confidence as I Iearn to face my problems head-on and to make much better decisions about how to deal with them day to day. I am happy again, where I used to be depressed, and I am able to enjoy life again.”
That is my joy... knowing I had helped my clients in a small but significant way.
